Opioid Agonist Treatment (OAT) Clinics
What Is Opioid Agonist Treatment?
Opioid Agonist Treatment (OAT) is a medically supervised treatment for opioid use disorder. It uses medications that help reduce opioid withdrawal symptoms and cravings, making it easier to achieve greater stability and focus on recovery.
Treatment is overseen by a physician and tailored to each person’s medical needs, circumstances, and recovery goals.
OAT can be part of a longer-term treatment plan and can be combined with counselling, peer support, mental health services, and other recovery supports.
OAT Treatment Options
Treatment is individualized based on your needs and a medical assessment.
Methadone
Methadone is a medication commonly used to treat opioid use disorder. It can help reduce withdrawal symptoms and cravings and is prescribed and monitored as part of an individualized treatment plan.
Suboxone (Buprenorphine-Naloxone)
Suboxone combines buprenorphine and naloxone and is another medication used to treat opioid use disorder. Our physicians can assess whether Suboxone is an appropriate treatment option based on your individual needs and circumstances.
Other OAT Options
Other OAT medications and approaches may be considered when clinically appropriate. Your healthcare provider will work with you to determine an appropriate treatment plan.
OAT medical care is covered by MSP for eligible BC residents.
